Enrollment Policy

Click here to view Pine Lake Preparatory’s Enrollment Policy. The North Carolina General Statute 115C-218.45 Admission Requirements for Charter Schools is summarized below (click here to view the full statute):

Summary of State Admission Requirements

  1. Any child who is qualified under the laws of this State for admission to a public school is qualified for admission to a charter school.
  2. No local board of education shall require any student enrolled in the local school administrative unit to attend a charter school.
  3. Admission to a charter school shall not be determined according to the school attendance area in which a student resides, except that any local school administrative unit in which a public school converts to a charter school shall give admission preference to students who reside within the former attendance area of that school.
  4. Admission to a charter school shall not be determined according to the local school administrative unit in which a student resides.
  5. A charter school shall not discriminate against any student on the basis of ethnicity, national origin, gender, or disability. Except as otherwise provided by law or the mission of the school as set out in the charter, the school shall not limit admission to students on the basis of intellectual ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, athletic ability, disability, race, creed, gender, national origin, religion, or ancestry. Within one year after the charter school begins operation, the charter school shall make efforts for the population of the school to reasonably reflect the racial and ethnic composition of the general population residing within the local school administrative unit in which the school is located or the racial and ethnic composition of the special population that the school seeks to serve residing within the local school administrative unit in which the school is located. The school shall be subject to any court-ordered desegregation plan in effect for the local school administrative unit.
  6. During each period of enrollment, the charter school shall enroll an eligible student who submits a timely application, unless the number of applications exceeds the capacity of a program, class, grade level, or building. In this case, students shall be accepted by lot. Once enrolled, students are not required to reapply in subsequent enrollment periods.
  7. Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, a charter school may refuse admission to any student who has been expelled or suspended from a public school under G.S. 115C-390.5 through G.S. 115C-390.11 until the period of suspension or expulsion has expired.

Applications for the Lottery

The applications for the 2021-2022 Sibling Lottery and General Admission Lottery will open November 1, 2020. The online application process for Siblings of current students will close at 10 p.m. on January 31, 2021. The online application for the General Lottery will close on February 12, 2021. Only one application per child will be accepted.

Only apply once per child. Submitting duplicate applications will result in disqualifying the student’s application. All applicants to the lottery must be North Carolina residents at time of the lottery with a physical North Carolina address. Children must turn 5 years old on or before August 31, 2020 to apply for Kindergarten.

Siblings with shared birth dates (twins, triplets, etc.) will be pulled in sequential order. For example when twins apply, our computer script identifies the twins prior to lottery. If one is pulled as wait list number 43, the other twin will be automatically numbered wait list number 44. Then the random ordering of the other names will continue. An application needs to be completed for each multiple birth child. Please remember to complete the multiple birth sibling section for each child.

Email Confirmations

Parents will receive an email confirmation from Google (not Pine Lake) This Google email serves as confirmation of your successful submission of your child’s application for Pine Lake’s 2021-2022 lottery. Listed in the email is a recap of your application. There is an edit button, should you need to correct a mistake. If you make a change, you will receive an additional confirmation email.

The Lottery Process

Names are entered into a computer database and pulled at the General Lottery held in February. Students are assigned a wait list number based on the order in which their name is pulled for the grade they are applying for. This will be the wait list number for the year. If one child in a family receives an offer, siblings will only receive an offer if their wait list number moves up to an offer for the grade they are applying. They will be considered “siblings” for the next year (after one child in the family is attending) and must apply to the sibling lottery for the following academic year. Per state law, North Carolina Charter Schools are not permitted to carry-over wait lists year to year; therefore, it is necessary to apply for each school year.

Once one child in the family is a member of the Pine Lake Community, siblings of enrolled students receive preferred enrollment status the following year. All students are required by NC Charter School law to complete an application for admission. Applications for siblings are available online from November 1st to January 31. The siblings will receive a wait list number or offer for enrollment after the sibling lottery is held in February. Siblings of currently enrolled students are offered placement in the appropriate grade, if space is available in that grade for the following school year.

Once enrolled, students remain enrolled until a parent withdraws a student by contacting the Registrar’s office. When a student withdraws, space becomes available in that grade and a call or email is placed to the next person on the wait list. The calls/emails continue until the position is filled. Each year school leadership determines how far into the academic year to continue making offers as positions become available. Factors that affect the decision include space, supplies, and grade level.

Parents may attend the lottery, but attendance is not required. Attending the lottery does not improve chances of admission. Families will be notified by mail regarding their lottery number within three weeks following the day of the lottery.

Tours and Open Houses

Tours and Open Houses

Please understand that we cannot offer tours prior to the lottery. While we are excited to welcome new families onto our campus, the volume of people wanting to tour makes it challenging for our current students to maintain their focus on learning.

We strongly suggest that if you receive an offer for enrollment during the lottery or a subsequent invitation to attend an open house/tour, that you please attend the open house/tour on one of the dates listed. This will ensure that you are prepared to accept or decline the seat if offered at any point, especially if a seat is offered to you in July or August, when you will only have a short time frame to make a decision.

Principals, Assistant Principals and teachers are available to answer questions during these sessions.

When can I apply?
Applications are accepted online from November 1st at 8:00 a.m. to January 31st (Sibling Lottery); and February 12 (General Lottery) at 10:00 p.m. for the following academic year.

The lottery is held on the PLP campus in the STEM Building Auditorium.

The General Lottery starts at 9:00 a.m. We use a computer program to generate numbers. The lottery for all grades will be finished by 9:30 a.m.

Email [email protected] with the changes.

Will there be an open house?
Virtual open house are being offered January 12 and 14. Please see the Virtual Tours page for links to register, or the recorded webinar to watch at your convenience.

We applied last year but were not accepted, does applying multiple years give us an advantage?
No, per state law you must apply every year for the appropriate grade.

I have two children; if one gets an offer does the other child get in as well?
No, each grade has a wait list. When a seat becomes available, an offer is made in the order of wait list numbers in that grade.

My child is currently a student at Pine Lake Preparatory. Does this mean their sibling will have a place at PLP next year?
No. Siblings must submit a sibling application and the Sibling Lottery determines the order in which offers will be extended to siblings based on space available in each grade. To apply to the Sibling Lottery, visit between November 1 and January 31. Be sure to use the sibling application and not the general application.

My child has been offered a space at Pine Lake Preparatory. Does this mean their sibling will have a place at PLP this year also?
No. Siblings will maintain their wait list number for the academic year. The following year siblings must submit a sibling application. The sibling lottery determines the order in which offers will be extended to the siblings based on space available.

After the lottery, how do I find out my child’s number?
Pine Lake will mail letters to the applicants with their wait list number or an offer of enrollment within a week of the lottery. When you apply, PLEASE create a personal ID code and this code will be published on a PDF posted on our website with wait list numbers on the Monday after the lottery.

Who is a sibling?
Foster children are not considered siblings for the purposes of enrollment preference. To qualify for preference, there must be a legal relationship with the sibling (i.e. adoption). With blended families, the same question of sibling status arises, and the determination is a bit more difficult. Marriage and/or adoption would clearly grant sibling status; however, the school must also consider biological ties through step or half siblings. Conversely, if an individual with children has a live-in partner with children from another relationship, those would not count as siblings because they do not share a biological parent.

Is there a website where I can read more about NC Charter school law regarding enrollment?

Do I need to re-apply for my currently enrolled children?
You do not need to re-apply; however, we will have re-enrollment in January. This is a simple form where you state whether or not your child will be returning.

Currently enrolled families should notify Jamie Connotillo at [email protected] or [email protected] as soon as the family decides to withdraw or move out of the PLP community. Wait listed families (especially siblings) are eager to receive an offer to attend. Please release your spot as soon as you know you are moving!

How old does my child have to be to enroll in Kindergarten? The child must turn 5 years old on or before August 31, 2020.
